International services between Europe and India

The year 1867 holds a significant place in the history of international services between Europe and India. Before 1867, there was no direct telegraph communication between India and Europe. While there were numerous independent telegraph lines in different countries, messages had to be repeated multiple times, resulting in messages taking weeks to transmit and arriving in a highly distorted and distorted state. Experiences like these confirmed that the critical need for a fast and reliable telegraph system between England and India could only be met by laying a comprehensive line interconnected under an integral management system between Prussia, Russia, and Persia. The plan for a line crossing the continents was formulated by Werner von Schreimann of Germany, who realized his dream by raising funds and obtaining political permission from Russia, Persia, and other relevant countries. He began laying the line in 1867 and despite enormous and unexpected difficulties They completed laying the line by 1869. Compared to the sophisticated communication technologies of today, this line was a relatively simple task. It was a completely open telegraph system, but it used 68,706 poles made of pine, oak, and iron, and the work took three years to complete. When, for the first time, communication between Calcutta and London, spanning nearly 7,000 miles, was as fast and accurate as between two neighboring telegraph stations, it was considered a remarkable feat. Despite floods, earthquakes, wars, and other disasters, the lines remained operational, maintaining a high standard of service until 1931, when they were taken over by the postal administrations of the respective countries. Even today, a section of the original line remains operational in Persia.

In commemoration of the centenary of the Indo-European Telegraph, which is being celebrated this year, the Department of Posts is issuing a special postage stamp on November 9, 1967. source india post
