Peasant Uprising of Patharughat-1894

Image
The 1894 revolt of Patharughat is one of the most significant event in the history of Indian nationalism. This revolt resulted from peasants’ protest against the enhancement of land tax. By the end of the 19th century, the British Government succeeded in establishing a plantation economy in Assam to a great extent. A tax policy was framed with a dual strategy to increase the public revenue resources as well as to squeeze the peasantry so much that they would be forced to give up their traditional occupation and join the labour market. Between 1826 and 1893, the land revenue rates were enhanced several times, crippling the peasant economy. Thus, socio-economic changes brou  ght about during the colonial rule led to the complete breakdown of the backbone of peasant economy. The peasants began expressing their anger. During 1893-94, thousands participated in demonstrations and rallies for several days, particularly in Kamrup and Darrang Districts. At the same time, the peasants of Pat...

Bharat - The Mother of Democracy

Image
A 31 gun salute to the President heralded the birth of Indian Republic shortly before 1030 hours on January 26, 1950. It was 894 days after the country attained the dominion status following the end of British rule. The ceremony was held in the brilliantly decorated Darbar Hall of the Government House (now Rashtrapati Bhawan) and was attended by about 500 prominent dignitaries including Dr Soekarno, the President of Indonesian Republic. It was the beginning of a new Republic based on the principles of justice, liberty, equality and unity. This (26th January 2024) being the 75th Republic Day inspires us to look back and realize that Bharat has been the beckon of Democracy long before this idea was rediscovered by western thinkers. It is no surprise that after independence, the people of this country took to democracy as duck takes to water. India had a history of Republics that existed before and after Buddha. One such republic was Lichchhavi which was a part of Vajjika territory ...

Ram Janmbhoomi Temple Philosophy and morality

Image
Ram Janmbhoomi Temple Philosophy and morality are closely intertwined in Indian life. Dharma is the Indian word meaning morals and ethics. The word “dharma” derives from the root “dhr,” which means to hold. Dharma, therefore, serves to maintain the stability and development of human civilization by acting as a unifying force within it. Ramo Vighravan Dharma means Shri Ram is Dharma incarnate. Maharishi Valmiki called Shri Ram ‘Dharmavigrah’ in Ramayana, God incarnated for the welfare of the people. Maharishi Ved Vyas said that the incarnation of Shri Ram was not just for killing demons but for teaching dharma to humans. Patience, forgiveness, control of mind, selflessness, purity, restraint of senses, wisdom, knowledge, truth and mercy, these ten characteristics of dharma have been properly reflected in the entire conduct of Shri Ram.   With the rise of fraudulent and illegal migration, Ministry of External Affairs has been making constant efforts to educate migrants about the perils of illegal channels. Illegal migrants may be forced to live a wretched existence in the target country through illegal channels because they will be unable to legitimately enroll in any assistance or protection systems introduced by GOI. Instead, they will be subjected to harsh, insecure, and unpleasant living situations, as well as a significant danger of being exploited by unlawful employers who may force them to accept flexible work schedules at low rates and in hazardous working conditions. As a result, international migration has become centered on the necessity for both safe and trained migration. Given our robust demographic dividend and rapidly changing global economic world order, Ministry of External Affairs has also been working on various activities such as aligning eMigrate portals with other Ministries in India as well...
