CHILDREN'S DAY

The Indian Posts and Telegraphs Depart-ment has, since the year 1957, been bringing out special stamps to celebrate Children's Day each year. Various themes connected with the care and well-being of children have been depicted in them.

The subject for the special stamp to be brought out on Children's Day on November 14, 1963, as recommended by the Inter-national Union for Child Welfare, Geneva, is "A National Policy for Children".

Within the frame-work of this idea, on the suggestion of the Indian Council for Child Welfare, the Posts and Telegraphs De-partment has chosen the provision of mid-day meals to school going children-as the theme for this year's Children's Day stamp. This is one of the several schemes which has been launched to improve the health of our children.

The Posts and Telegraphs Department is happy to bring out again, this year, a special postage stamp emphasizing the cause of child welfare.

  India and Mauritius share a longstanding bilateral relationship that spans several decades. While formal diplomatic relations began 75 years ago in 1948, the arrival of Indians in Mauritius dates back to the early 18th century, when Indian artisans and masons were brought to Mauritius under French Colonial rule. In the 19th and early 20th century, about half a million Indian indentured workers were brought to Mauritius under British rule, out of which, about two-thirds settled down in Mauritius. The first batch of 36 indentured workers arrived in Mauritius on 2nd November 1834 and 2nd November is now celebrated every year as ‘Aapravasi Diwas’.
